It is now generally acknowledged that Tidal Stream devices may be a hazard to marine life due to the exposed rotating blades. The Scotstream Tidal Stream Turbine has a very novel feature in that it is fitted with a protective screen steel net to prevent the rotors contacting with marine life. This will remove the requirement to shut down the turbine whenever marine life is in close proximity.
The use of a protective screen net is an obvious and low cost way to avoid a negative environmental risk to marine life.
Scotstream is requesting advice from Environmental parties with respect to the specification required for the protective screens in terms of its strength requirement and mesh size.
